Cardboard

Free Art Friday – Supersized and on a Sunday!

It’s Friday, the sun is shining and the art is free. Come on down! We have prepared a whole load of stuff which is hopefully already in the clutches of our good man MyDogSighs for his upcoming Free Art Friday event in Southsea this Sunday. As far as i’m aware he has hundreds of pieces from a wide variety of artists and all you have to do to snag one is head to Southsea and grab one for yourself. It’s a foolproof plan! We’ve provided a variety of pieces (mainly on cardboard) and all come complete with the ‘id-iom certified’ stamp that guarantees authenticity. My main concern is whether i’ll be able to get down in order to snag something for myself…

Why am i always the last to know?

Mupan takes a break…

Mupan takes a break...

Mupan takes a break...

Sometimes the stresses of modern life get a little too much and it’s imperative to take a break and recharge the batteries. Even the seemingly indefatigable Mupan needs this from time to time. So occasionally he packs his bags and heads to Naples, his favourite holiday spot on the west coast of Italy. Here we can see him in his glad-rags taking a little time out from the travails of the tourist life and lounging on one of the many conveniently placed rubbish dumps that litter (pun intended!) the streets of Naples and really take on a life of their own in summertime. He just adores it there and will definitely be back again.

As it is such a sunny day we thought we’d hit the streets for a little Free Art Friday action and get Mupan’s little memento out there for someone to find and brighten up their undoubtedly dreary day. It’s just a shame you can’t really see the glitter (in the white area of this pic) as it really sparkles in this lovely Spring sunshine.

A long time ago in a galaxy blah, blah, blah

Someone got in touch with us asking if we’d done any Star Wars related imagery on the street for possible inclusion in a book on the topic. Since then I’ve watched ‘Revenge of the Sith‘ for the first time and was quite relieved after the horror of Jar Jar Binks that George Lucas can actually still make a decent film. So with renewed vigour and a little more faith in the whole Star Wars franchise I made a quick check of the id-iom archives and we managed to locate a few bits that could potentially be of use and then set to work putting them up and getting some snaps.

Nobody understands me

R2D2 has a problem. Nobody can really understand him. They all pretend they do just to keep him happy but his tweets and whistles are completely unintelligible and they only keep him round because he knows how to make a decent mojito…

Don't be a puppet for the Empire!

Graffiti on cardboard found in a clonetrooper training area on Kamino. Despite an intensive search the culprit was never found… The search continues.

Join the Empire and see the Galaxy

An enlistment/propaganda poster from the walls of a drinking establishment in Coruscant.

Galactic Foreign Policy

A cheeky bit of political graffiti from the mean streets of Tatooine. Stick it to the Man!

Free Art Friday. On a Monday. Are you mad?

On the street. On a Friday.

Whatever next? Sundays on a Wednesday? Breathe easy folks – we may be daft but we aren’t crazy. This was, in fact, put on the street and photographed on Friday but we’ve had a few gremlins interfering with the weekend works schedule and have only been able to get it on today.

We have already done a slate version of this as a get-well-soon gift for a friend but thought that a cardboard version for the street would be good too. I’m still quite proud of my ‘Nobody understands M.E’ line (given that M.E. or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as it’s also known is still largely a mystery to medical science). Good luck to her and I hope she finds a happy home. And that’s that.

Roses are red, cardboard is brown, I’m rubbish at poems, so please don’t frown

At least id-iom loves you!

Down in the basement of the id-iom lab one of our R&D monkeys pointed out that it was Valentine’s Day today and that we should maybe do a little something to show how much we love everyone. Considering our last offering for Valentine was a little downbeat we thought we’d have something a little more sentimental this year. After some feverish tinkering we came up with the highly original idea of using a cardboard rose with a little note from us to try and brighten up a few peoples day. I can’t imagine they’ll last very long as surely they make the perfect gift (‘ooh urban art’ how very on trend!) for someone too lazy/forgetful to get something nice for their significant other half. Get ’em while you can…

Zombies this way (Free Art Friday)

Zombies this way...

Zombies this way...

We all know the countless problems the living dead can cause so sometimes it helps to be prepared with handy signs pointing the way to the hungry zombie hordes. This is especially useful if you’re tooled up with the latest in double barrelled shotgun technology. Just remember not to let them get too close – and never let your guard down! The blood spatters pay testament to someone who forgot that…

It may be late in the day but it’s still Friday (I checked) so this definitely still counts as Free Art Friday! We will hopefully have a couple of pieces appearing in this evening’s feature on Free Art Friday on the Culture Show (BBC 2 @ 7pm) so keep your eyes peeled.

Upfest @ Freeze 2011 video

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk0udsOFnTc]

Unfortunately we forgot to get out our video camera out at Freeze festival this year – but fear not as it has all been captured and edited much better than we would have done in the short video above. Our piece gets featured a little and you even get a quick shot of someone having a crafty puff on our extra large art fag. Good times all round…

The Diamond Commission

The Diamond Commission - 1 of 12

Superb. Friday is here again. And to celebrate such a momentous occasion we have a new print for your perusal. We were asked to produce a print which is to be given to each member of a hardworking team of tradesmen on completion of a building project. As I’m currently right in the middle of my black single screen obsession (well, two if you count the ‘id-iom certified’ stamp) it seemed pretty obvious what i was going to produce. As diamonds are both tough and valuable I thought they’d make an ideal subject for my design and so set to work. After a little design and some messing round with screens I had managed to produce 12 copies of ‘The Diamond Commission’. They are currently with our framer but should be back ready for distribution in the next few days. I hope they like them…

With the feeling that Summer is definitely on it’s way out we thought it best to hit the streets with a few pieces as they were beginning to build up a little and it’s not really a job i relish in wintertime. With that thought in mind we took a wander round the East End and also made our way south of the river. We even had a little international help and managed to get some pieces up in Paris and Sao Paulo just to round things off. I think my favourite pieces are the ones featuring our little character who we’ve just christened as Mupan. We first used him here but I think you can expect to see a little more of him if you keep your eyes peeled…

The funk of forty thousand years…

It’s amazing what a little musical inspiration, some cardboard and a camera can get you. I reckon this is a good case in point. There i was, minding my own business listening to Thriller on the stereo when the muse came down and whispered a plan in my ear. A short while later I had myself an authentic Michael Jackson gravestone and a zombie hand. A homage to Thriller it was to be.

I was originally intending to get this out on the anniversary of Jacko’s untimely demise but unfortunately Glastonbury got in the way so I present it now rather than wait until next time. You should definitely watch the video again in all it’s 14 minute glory. Top notch stuff.
