USR&MM ‘Stoya’ Pleasurebot

If you’ve ever read any Isaac Asimov books (and if you haven’t then you’re missing out) then you’re probably aware that many of his books concern robots which were created by his fictional company ‘USR&MM’ (which stands for U.S Robots & Mechanical Men).

Now I’m sure that Asimov didn’t exactly have ‘pleasurable’ purposes in mind when he developed his ideas on robots but you know that if we had these kind of things in the real world it would only be a matter of time (probably just minutes) before somebody had the bright idea of fitting them out for the oldest profession.

Anyway, here we have a somewhat phallic looking promotional poster of sorts for the cream of the robotic crop. The state of the art, Android powered, ‘Stoya’ model Pleasurebot.  Coming soon…

She’s about 3.5m tall and 3.5m wide and is currently in place on a side street parallel to Water Lane in Camden (but the other side of the train tracks). I thought she was finished just as the rain started then finally remembered to install her cybernetic glowing LED eye just to give it that final futuristic touch. Hopefully it’ll be working for the next few weeks and we’ll be able to get a night shot before it runs out. Many thanks to The Real Art of Street Art  for sorting the space for us!

Something from the cellar (Blue Nun)

There I was aimlessly wandering the aisles of my local supermarket searching for an ingredient they undoubtedly didn’t have. I was feeling a little dispirited and glanced at the new wine description they’d put up for Blue Nun. Seeing the halfhearted description made me want to cry a little so I thought I’d see if I could jazz it up somewhat.

The previous description was ‘Popular wine from Germany with a citrusy tang and a hint of honey on the finish. Great with Asian noodles. Taste Guide 4.’ I think mine is a somewhat more honest appraisal of the wine’s true character. I’d like to think these will go unnoticed by the staff until some eagle eyed customer decides to spoil my fun and brings it to their attention. Only time will tell…

I was navigating the aisles of my local supermarket when, due to my girlfriend’s inability to make a quick decision, my eye was drawn to the flowery descriptions of some of their lower end wines. Phrases like ‘warming spice flavours’, ‘smooth finish’ and ‘floral notes’ seemed to litter the florid accounts of the wines’ supposed qualities. Now, it just so happens that wine is firmly on my banned substance list so I certainly wasn’t in the position to put these contrived claims to the test.

Instead I decided to get down with a bit of culture jamming and recreate the descriptions using my overactive imagination as a guide. I think what we’re left with is probably a more honest appraisal of the wine’s true character. I’d like to think these will go unnoticed by the staff until some eagle eyed customer decides to spoil my fun and brings it to their attention. Only time will tell…

Man the f*ck up!

I’ve had a slightly enigmatic little project on the go for a little while now (as I’m really not sure what to do with it) and needed some fake advertising for the reverse side. Hmmm… What to do, what to do? Then in a  small flash of inspiration it came to me. I would create a drink advertisement for a nice frosty can of ‘Man the fuck up!’ Once I had that much locked in the rest of the design pretty much took care of itself.

I would imagine the drink to be something along the lines of an alcoholic power drink (do they even exist?) to be consumed when life conspires against you. A little something that would definitely separate the men from the boys. The online and TV advertising would feature an accompanying soundtrack of a dubstep version of Billy Ocean’s 1985 hit ‘When the going gets tough’ followed by the tagline of ‘Feeling tired and emotional? Try a can of Man the fuck up!’ read by James Earl Jones. And that would be that.  I just wonder what a can of Man Up would  actually tastes like…

Error 404: Advert not found

With the somewhat gusty weather we’ve had recently this billboard has managed to peel itself naked. And that, of course, is quite the affront to any self-respecting urban artist. So with our woolen thinking caps pulled down firmly on to our respective heads, we came up with a quick joke on the idea of the advert not being there.

We presumed the matter to be time sensitive as we weren’t sure when the ad man would be back to shove more tasteless shots of half naked women down our gullet so quickly set to work cutting a stencil. This is probably the reason why its so small compared to the actual billboard or at least that’s the story we’re sticking to. It was definitely nothing to do with the fact it was measured ‘by eye’…

They will come… we must fight!

Manx anti-Nazi propaganda c.1939

I decided that I wanted to produce something that looked like a vintage anti-Nazi propaganda poster for the Isle of Man and one of the perks of being an artist is coming up with some outlandish idea and then being allowed to bring it to reality regardless of any other factors – and today’s piece is a good case in point. I had just finished Ian Tregillis’ enjoyable alternate history book ‘Bitter Seeds’ about British warlocks fighting Nazi superheroes in WWII and thought to myself that Nazi bashing is pretty much encouraged in other media – books (like Bitter Seeds), computer games (like the Call of duty mini-game where you have to kill as many Nazi zombies as you can) and film (Inglourious Basterds springs to mind). So I thought I’d jump in on the action through the medium of art.

As the Laxey Wheel is one of the most iconic and easily recognisable of the island’s historic landmarks I thought it would be a good place to start. Throw in an improbably large evil Nazi owl descending from a darkening sky with it’s talons outstretched  to snatch at the wheel and you’re off and running. Then all you need is some patriotic sounding text and you’ve got yourself some fake Manx propaganda c.1939. Right, what’s next?

For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn.

So there I was innocently posting nonsense on Facebook when I get into a conversation with Mr George A Raggett and we come to the conclusion that an A4 art swap was in order. After further discussion it emerges that I would be very much liking something that was all nice and fluffy whilst George was requiring something as dark as could possibly be. Challenge accepted.

After giving it a little thought a quote that is attributed (but not confirmed) to Ernest Hemmingway sprang to mind. Apparently he won a bet by crafting a short story of under ten words. The story was “For Sale, Baby Shoes, Never Worn”. Now that is pretty dark (and very brief). So I thought I’d work with that and give it a little spin by making it into an actual classified ad and including a few cheeky little zombie reference in there just to add a little spice. Once I’d perfected my vintage paper effect with spraypaint it was on with getting it printed and adding in the extra blood splashes and the red circle to highlight the ad. Challenge completed.

I found out just this morning that my parcel arrived safely with George accompanied by the parcel he had sent to me just before Christmas. And there I was imagining the German Postal Service would be efficient…

We did a few fake Tube adverts a while back but I’ve just found this one on the camera and realised that we forgot to share it with all the peoples on the interweb. Of course id-iom does not condone drugs in an official capacity but we do recognise that there needs to be standards for all parties involved otherwise some serious problems might arise and who would want that? Not us that’s for sure!!

All we’re asking is for people to heed the advice given on the advert. If everyone does there should be no need to get serious.

I’m on a roll now with our take on scam baiting. It all started when I received an email from aburimar777@gmail.com kindly offering me 40% of $5.5 million if I could help him get it out of Burkina Faso. I liked his brazen approach but thought his email could do with a little work so decided to give it a little style makeover (see here).  We’ve also used his email on a few bizarre posters with the hope that he’ll receive some fun emails to brighten up his day. Now we’ve reinvented him as a man who’ll help you sort absolutely any of life’s mysteries – from the trivial to the more challenging philosophical conundrums. I’m just hoping that a few bored commuters are going to be mystified enough to take up his kind offer and chuck him an email…
