Rabbit in your headlights

When I first found this piece of metal I’m pretty sure I had a good idea in mind for it. Fast forward a couple of months and I find it in a corner of my ‘studio’ (which is currently a shed) and can’t remember for the life of me what I was going to use it for. Hmmm, what to do next? Whilst racking my feeble brain for my original idea the song ‘Rabbit in your headlights‘ (by UNKLE featuring the dulcet tones of Thom Yorke) comes on the stereo. For those that are unfamiliar with the song and video I’ve posted it below.

Thankfully this inspired me to ditch the search for my original idea (if you read this please come home!) in favour of one inspired by the UNKLE song. So here we have a man sat deep in thought who can’t see the metaphorical headlights of the car that’s coming to hit him. It’s probably his girlfriend driving. The lights are metaphorical because otherwise this would be a precursor to a pretty grisly scene from ‘World of Rallying Gone Wrong’. Anyway, I think this piece will be joining the pile of street drop stuff to be deposited when I can find a half decent day in which to enjoy putting it out…

You had me at whagwan

Since living in Brixton I’ve become enamoured with the phrase ‘Whagwan’. For the uninitiated, the phrase means ‘what’s going on’ in Jamaican Patois. The spelling can vary but the meaning doesn’t change. Once I’d combined that with a nice little romantic statement and a bit of traditional Claddagh ring design, hey presto, I had a fully formed idea that became this little declaration of love for Brixton.

Weather depending she’ll be hitting the streets at some point today so if you’re in the SW2 area keep your eyes peeled…

Gravitas – Back to the Future mixtape project

Gravitas mixtapge slate – ‘let the beat see the street’

Gravitas mixtape slate – front

Gravitas mixtape slate – back

As we found ourselves in sunny Southsea on the weekend and knew we’d be hanging with the king of free art drops, MyDogSighs, we thought we’d best take a little something down to distribute. What better than a new instalment of our ‘Back to the Future’ mixtape project which sees us combine our two of our loves – music and street art. Our initial plan was to get some new mixes together, burn them on CD and then put them out on the street with some exclusive slate cover art. This will soon be followed by mixes from a (hopefully) eclectic range of other Djs.

Along with the legend ‘Gravitas’ (meaning seriousness or dignity) we have a couple of curious cats who have managed to make an appearance and peek interestedly round the slate. I haven’t really got a more in depth explanation than that currently… As were strolling down the promenade the pier came into view and we had a natural photo opportunity! After much fussing with placement and lying full stretch on the beach in order to get a good snap we had another piece live on street. I wonder what will happen to this one?

There’s some contact details on the back and we’re hoping that we’ll get a reply/critique/abuse via email from whoever found it and then hopefully they’ll upload it to the web and share it around for further praise/ridicule. So, if you see one of these suckers on the street feel free to take it home and then lambast us via email on our shoddy skills and poor tune selection.

We are also now open to submissions – so if you dj at all and fancy taking part just get in touch and if we like your mix then you’re in! You can find more information on our facebook page here.

Ready or not, here i come!

Ready or not, here i come!

So, it’s been a while since we’ve put one of our ‘Back to the Future‘ art & mixtape combo’s out. But that’s not entirely our fault. The weather has only recently begun to play ball again after a brief stint a couple of weeks ago. Anyway this one features the likeness of one half on id-iom just moments before he uncovers his eyes to witness the unbroken sunshine we’ve been having this week. Although by the time he’s blinked it’ll probably be back to winter conditions…

The musical accompaniment taped to the back of the slate cover art is a frothy little summertime mix guaranteed to get you in the mood to party. I can only hope whoever finds it appreciates it. We’ve got a few more of these in the barrel and ready to go so watch this space.

Futility – Back to the Future mixtape project

Futility – Back to the Future mixtape project

Futility (front)

Futility (back)

This is the second instalment of our ‘Back to the Future’ mixtape project which sees us combine our two of our loves – music and street art. Basically our initial plan was to get some new mixes together, burn them on CD and then put them out on the street with some exclusive slate cover art. This is the second id-iom mix called ‘Futility’ and will soon be followed by mixes from a (hopefully) eclectic range of other Djs.

It’s the size of a standard roofing slate and has the CD securely taped to the back so she should last a reasonable amount of time out in the open. It has been completed using the magic of paint pens, spraypaint and stencils. They are signed on reverse with our trademark id-iom stencil and logo.

We are also now open to submissions – so if you dj at all and fancy taking part just get in touch and if we like your mix then you’re in! You can find more information on our facebook page here:

Happy hunting!

Back to the Future mixtape project

Here comes the sun… (Mixtape with slate cover art)

Here comes the sun… (Mixtape with slate cover art – back)

Back to the Future – Exclusive id-iom mix tape with original slate cover art! All for the grand price of nothing! You’ve just got to find it…

It’s 2013 and we’re going back to the future with our street art take on the classic mix tape. It’s a combination of that old school hop with that new school hip! Although we have had to move with the times so we’ve gone and burned it on CD.

Both members of id-iom have been djing for more years than we care to remember and rather than go the inevitable route of uploading our mixes to Soundcloud and have no-one listen to it we’ve gone all experimental and attempted to fuse our street art activities and proclivity for making mix tapes. We’ve completed the hour long mix and then done the slate cover art to compliment the tunes. From there it’s just a matter of putting it on the street and seeing what happens.

Only a very small number of copies exist and ideally we’re hoping that we’ll get a reply/critique/abuse via email from whoever found it and then hopefully they’ll upload it to the web and share it around for further praise/ridicule. Really we’re just too lazy to upload it ourselves and are hoping that someone else will do it for us. It looks better that way. So, if you see one of these suckers on the street feel free to take it home and then lambast us via email on our shoddy skills and poor tune selection.

Smile!

Smile!

Smile!

Positive social interactions (or PSI’s) are the little moments that can turn a bad day good or just plain put a smile on your face. They can be as simple as a smile or a ‘thank you’ but their effect can really bring about a change in mood. Their polar opposite – negative social interactions (or, you’ve guessed it, NSI’s) can bring about a catastrophic effect on performance when daisy-chained one after another. But we aren’t talking about those today…

The lady in this piece understands the rule of the PSI’s and she’s harnessing it to full effect. She’s beaming her best smile straight at you and don’t you just feel good about it? Positive affirmations are what it’s all about and this girl is giving you them by the bucket load. What’s not to like?

Now if only I had a sexy looking girl at the end of my bed every morning giving me a big cheesy smile and bearing what looks suspiciously like a huge joint I’d be out of bed with a spring in my step but it would remain to be seen exactly how productive I’d be that day…..

She’s a generous A2 in size and is a single layer screen print on lovely hand sprayed speckled background. Signed on reverse.

Last night… (My Dog Sighs & Roa)

It’s been a while since we’ve gone out to a gallery show and I could hardly resist going to My Dog Sigh’s ‘Can Man’ show at the Pure Evil Gallery so it was time to don my ironic glasses and hit the East End. My Dog Sighs is involved with Free Art Friday and likes nothing better than dropping his cans and other work on the street for people to find – but this time they’re all indoors. There was an edition of 30 of his small cans, various other larger cans and a few canvases. They were all framed nicely, priced well and looked great on the wall. I think my favourite pieces were the bigger catering size cans, the smaller cans with woolly hats on and the can which was wearing a burka. Great stuff all round and we wish him all the very best. The show is on for another 10 days so if you are in the area you should definitely pop in.

After a couple of drinks and a swift chit-chat with My Dog we headed off to Stolenspace for a quick shufty at Roa‘s new show ‘Hypnagogia’ (which, i’ve found out, is the name for the state between being awake and being asleep). Roa’s work is impressive as ever and I like his work on bits of wood/furniture. Although saying that if i had to choose between his street work and his gallery work I’d take the street work every time. If i had a large industrial building he could work on I would invite him over and ask him very nicely if he’d consider doing a huge Manx cat for me…

Free Art Friday – Supersized and on a Sunday!

It’s Friday, the sun is shining and the art is free. Come on down! We have prepared a whole load of stuff which is hopefully already in the clutches of our good man MyDogSighs for his upcoming Free Art Friday event in Southsea this Sunday. As far as i’m aware he has hundreds of pieces from a wide variety of artists and all you have to do to snag one is head to Southsea and grab one for yourself. It’s a foolproof plan! We’ve provided a variety of pieces (mainly on cardboard) and all come complete with the ‘id-iom certified’ stamp that guarantees authenticity. My main concern is whether i’ll be able to get down in order to snag something for myself…

Why am i always the last to know?

Mupan takes a break…

Mupan takes a break...

Mupan takes a break...

Sometimes the stresses of modern life get a little too much and it’s imperative to take a break and recharge the batteries. Even the seemingly indefatigable Mupan needs this from time to time. So occasionally he packs his bags and heads to Naples, his favourite holiday spot on the west coast of Italy. Here we can see him in his glad-rags taking a little time out from the travails of the tourist life and lounging on one of the many conveniently placed rubbish dumps that litter (pun intended!) the streets of Naples and really take on a life of their own in summertime. He just adores it there and will definitely be back again.

As it is such a sunny day we thought we’d hit the streets for a little Free Art Friday action and get Mupan’s little memento out there for someone to find and brighten up their undoubtedly dreary day. It’s just a shame you can’t really see the glitter (in the white area of this pic) as it really sparkles in this lovely Spring sunshine.
