After watching Style Wars a while back I decided I wanted in on some of that funky fresh wild style 80’s action so cut myself a ‘Take it from the champs, graffiti is for chumps’ stencil based on the New York subway’s anti-graffiti campaign that ran in the 1980’s with the same tagline (which features in the film). This cheeky little number has graced a few walls already but I just liked the way it fitted on this piece of street furniture with it’s tongue-in-cheek message. How long it will last though i’m not so sure…
With the advent of legal cannabis in some US states and the legalise bandwagon gaining momentum in other a few other places internationally I thought I’d look ahead to a time when the UK has followed suit and id-iom have managed to get themselves a combined gallery/studio space/coffeeshop in London’s bustling West End.
In order to market to our new found clientele we’d need some handy marketing materials – which is where our little infographic cards would come in pretty handy. It’s an illustrated guide for beginners on how to go about crafting a small joint. On the reverse are a selection of id-iom approved advertisements which we hope would be of interest to our prospective patrons. There, I’ve got it all sorted – apart from what to actually do with them. I was initially thinking of getting them into the little pockets on the backs of airline seats but I only ever seem to travel Ryanair and they’ve removed the pockets. The cheap feckers.
If anyone can think of something fun we can do with them please do drop us a line as I can’t currently think of a suitable use for them. Which probably begs the question of why I created them in the first place but that’s not really for me to answer right now.
After being dispatched to our local corner shop to procure some Le Puy lentils for that evening’s curry I had reason to examine the dizzying array of canned food on offer in our local corner shop. Along with all the usual products they also have some particular goods that cater to the local Caribbean, Polish and Portuguese communities. It’s sometimes tricky to tell what some of the more exotic looking cans even contain. And that gave me an idea.
The 1973 film ‘Soylent Green’ starring Charlton Heston is set in a dystopian future where the earth is hugely overpopulated and there just isn’t enough food to go round. To try and solve this problem the Soylent corporation comes up with a new foodstuff called ‘Soylent Green’ which is ostensibly made from high energy plankton harvested from the world’s oceans. But that is not so, as we discover through Heston’s diligent detective work following a murder. He stumbles upon a bizarre state secret – that Soylent Green is made of people!
So, to celebrate both the incomprehensible range of cans on offer in our local shop and the 1973 film I came up with some Soylent Green cans for our local shop – complete with ingredients, nutrition information and cooking instructions. An internet search revealed that Polynesian cannibals used to call human flesh ‘longpig’ so I definitely had to include that (23% of the contents don’t you know!)
I found this print while I was clearing up a little and immediately thought of Bablu. If you’ve ever been in the Shoreditch area then you’ve probably been no more than 20 metres away from him at some point. He’s easily identified by his love of street art, his shifty but somewhat amiable character and his white Nike Air Force One’s. My thoughts were along the lines of ‘saw this and thought of you’ so thought I’d better get it in the post to him pronto before I forgot what I was doing and moved on to something else.
A couple of stencils and some hand finishing later and it was ready to go. The text in the background reads ‘And the Nikes on my feet keep my cypher complete’ and the QR code takes you to a mystery related link. Give it a try…
After our last release of pics from our Big Cartel page someone got in touch and asked if the little image we used at the top of the page was available as a picture. Never one to turn a fun commission down we agreed to make it reality and here we have the character known only as ‘masthead’. His past is unknown and his future is unwritten. Presently though he’s having a quite pint whilst waiting for a mysterious friend to turn up. That’s all I can say for now…

So this is the second of my cover redesigns for some 12″ records I found abandoned. I just had to give them a good home. At least temporarily before I repainted them and placed them back on the streets. With this one it originally looked something like this:

But now has some extra 3D effect linework in there. My skills are so seamless that my girlfriend thought that my update was the original cover. Until i put the ‘red’, ‘white’ and ‘blue’ lettering on there. The ‘white’ lets me down somewhat although I think the overall effect still works nicely. Anyway best of luck in finding it but we’ll update when they’re all out and about…

You want serendipity? I’ll give you serendipity. Although you may need a little background before it seems all that serendipitous. I’ve always loved records and have collected them on and off since I was about 16. I’ve also always been a womble and will pick up interesting things in my travels and take them home (usually to paint on). So what was I meant to do when I rounded a corner near my house and came across an armful of abandoned 12″ records lying by a bin. It was like seeing a load of forsaken kittens lying in the street. I had no choice but to scoop them up and head on my way feeling ever so slightly smug about the whole thing. While I was having a quick check through them (which revealed that they were largely mid 90’s dance) I thought I’d perhaps re-design the covers and then put them back out on the street.
So here’s the first of my redesigns. It was initially this:
But is now the marvel you see at the top. I’ve taken it quite literally and used a stencil of my own mum. Ha! That will hopefully fox someone when it gets back out on the street…

So its been a while since we threw a few bits and bobs on big cartel and this time we’ve got some smaller A4 pieces that we’ve been working on. These are sketches of images that we might one day knock into a bigger piece and then again we might not. These are all original and no reproductions will be the same as these A4 pieces.
It’s been over a year in the making (mainly because we’re so lazy) but we can finally reveal our huge edition of 2 (well 3 if you count the landscape one that is currently being hand finished) of our piece which was originally a large scale piece done at UPfest in 2012. It’s a combination of screen printing, stencils, spraypaint and a little hand finishing. The picture was based on a photo of a friend and I’m glad to say she has seen the piece since it was done and given it her blessing. I think the message is clear enough that no matter how tough we think we are love can make a fool of us all. Amen to that.

It’s been a while since i’ve been in the situation this chap finds himself in. He’s done all he can; got himself dressed up nice, got some flowers and found himself the right door to knock on. From here on in it’s no longer in his hands and the best he can do is put his best smile on and pretend he’s all confidence (which, he’s been informed, the ladies love). I can only wish him the best of luck…
He’s a compact A4 in size and is from a small edition of 5. Each has been completed using the magic of screen printing, paint pens, spraypaint and stencils. The print is signed on the reverse side and all are hand finished and unique.
