id-iom does Time Out

There I was having a flick through today’s print copy of Time Out and what do I find at the bottom of one of the first pages you come across? This little beauty. A nice little feature on some of the pop culture based subversions that we’ve been depositing in our local shops. Surely that means fame and fortune will be knocking on our door some time soon. Oh wait, who’s that ringing my bell….

No, it was just the neighbour demanding I turn the music down. I could barely hear him shouting over the smooth sounds of Nana Mouskouri. He really needs to calm down a bit.

Jack of Clubs

“There’s a guy in the place who’s got a bittersweet face. And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode” sang The Shamen in their 1992 No.1 hit ‘Ebeneezeer Goode’. There was much controversy at the time about whether or not the song was endorsing recreational drug use. Which it obviously was. It hardly takes a genius to work that one out. Anyway, you may wonder what that has to do with today’s piece. Not much directly but it does allow me to segue nicely into the world of MDMA, Ecstasy, madman, X or Mandy. Call it what you will. Back in the late 90’s London’s club scene was buzzing with places like Turnmills, The Cross, The End and Fabric (to name but a few) having wildly successful evenings week after week. You’d only have to venture into one of those booming dens of iniquity to witness a large percentage of the crowd looking decidedly happy, chatty and sweaty. Now I’m not endorsing anything but I had some good times in those places myself.

So today’s piece is a tribute to those good times, wherever you were at the time. I’ve got a few favourite touches on this piece – the googly eyes, the Mitsubishi sign overlaid on the club and the thread which overlays the stencil of the chemical composition of MDMA. Winner. Now, if anyone wants to save this from an uncertain life on the streets it’s time to speak up now…

BONUS FACT – When the Shamen appeared on Top of the Pops, it was expected that Mr.C would tone down the song due to its being broadcast. The group replaced the final lyric “Got any Salmon?” with “Has anyone got any underlay?” He was later asked about this in a radio interview, to which he replied that it was not a drug reference but a rug reference

Lady Sulina

Lady Sulina

Lady Sulina

It’s not very often that you get to paint a decent sized wall that’s only mere steps away from your front door but that exactly what happened this weekend. Whilst it seems everyone and their wife was in Birmingham for City of Colours we stayed very close to home and kept things real. There was a street party on the road where one half of id-iom lives and the lovely lady who arranges the party also managed to organise a wall for us as long as we kept it decent and saw to it that some of the local kids could get involved as well. Here at id-iom we believe you’re never too young to take up vandalism so jumped at the chance to give the little tykes a glimpse into the seedy underworld of the exterior redecoration specialist.

As the wall was mere moments away from both of our houses it was good to spend the day with all necessary conveniences close at hand. Including, of course, some speakers and chairs. It was a street party after all. After a few hours work with superb assistance from a number of local kids and adults it was time to try and make some finishing moves. The LED eye was installed and a few splashes of red were added before finally calling it a day and heading to the local hostelry for some well deserved refreshment…

Wash away your sins…

Wash away your sins...

Wash away your sins…

Every year tens of millions of Hindu’s plunge into the sacred waters of the Ganges in order to wash away their sins. Every 12 years (as it happens once every 3 years in rotation with 3 other cities) the small(ish) city of Allahbad witnesses a temporay population explosion as more than 25 million visitors descend for the festival of Kumbh Mela. Just think of 25 million people descending on any city. it must be crazy. Anyway, I digress. This lady is in serious need of the Ganges’ help as she’s been a naughty girl, a very naughty girl in fact and it’ll probably take a good few hours soaking in the the sacred river before even the mildest of her sins will be washed away. I think she’ll be there for a while…

Ponderland

Ponderland

Ponderland

Sometimes, usually when I’m meant to be doing some work, I’ll catch myself staring out the window and am really not sure how long I’ve been doing so. I’d like to think it’s only a few seconds and that my brain has gone into some kind of immediate fugue state whilst my eyes wander around whatever vista is being presented in front of me but I really couldn’t be sure. It’s just as likely I’ve been staring gormlessly into space for the best part of an hour with no conscious thought interfering with my staring. I’d also like to say that when I come to from one of my staring episodes that I’m hit with some unusually brilliant insight into the workings of the universe but I don’t think that’s the case either. I’m sure sometimes it must have helped with some unconscious processing but I just couldn’t be sure. Anyway here’s a somewhat abstract version of what I think I must look like during a good stare…

Things are beautiful if you love them

I just love rescuing an old bit of wood to paint on. Previously it was just an old shelf destined for the tip. Now it’s probably still destined for the tip but at least she goes out looking good. I even tried my hand at a little engraved lettering on this one – which was a bit trickier than I thought but still looks pretty reasonable in the flesh. Considering I didn’t have replacement tips for the little drill thing I was using I was fairly happy with the end result.

‘Things are beautiful if you love them’ is a nice little quote from French dramatist Jean Anouilh. I particularly like the idea that anything can be beautiful if you love it and the converse that things aren’t inherently beautiful but the act of loving them makes them beautiful. Heady stuff for a Friday morning. I’m sure normal service will resume soon enough…

Chris, I think I’d recommend the helmet option…

Sometimes, when I’m feeling a little low I play ‘clocks’, ‘the scientist’ and ‘yellow’ all at the same time, on constant repeat and with increasing volume until I feel that I am actually Chris Martin. It’s such an amazing feeling to consciously uncouple from yourself and hitch your trailer to Mr Martin’s consciousness. Truly mind blowing. Only joking. I can’t imagine what kind of tat you’d find floating around inside his bonce. You’d be experiencing some serious cognitive dissonance that’s for sure.

Anyway it’s been a good long while since we’ve done any celebrity quotes and I just couldn’t resist  doing a new one when I saw this quote from Coldplay’s sassy frontman. I think I’d safely recommend the helmet option for him. Probably safer that way. Now I’ve just got to think of somewhere fitting that I can deposit it on the street. Drop us a line if you’ve got a good idea…

A dark cloud descends

The Dark Cloud Descends

The Dark Cloud Descends

It’s coming to the end of the brief UK summer but we’ll hopefully still have a few days of sunshine left. Sadly, this cannot be said for this chap as a dark cloud has descended on his life and there’s nowt he can do about it. Why i hear you ask? Well he’s just found out that his ex (who recently left him due to his infidelities) has just won the Euromillions with the same weekly numbers they used to buy every week. She’s changed her mobile, moved in with some friends he’s never seen or heard of and is not replying to any of his increasingly desperate messages or emails. He’d try sending a carrier pigeon if he knew where to send it. To add insult to injury he’s just found out that she has been seen out on the town with one of her old flames. Now that’s enough to get anyone down in the dumps. I tried to tell him that everything happens for a reason and that it’ll be okay in the end but he wasn’t having any of it and just glared at me and stormed out. You can’t say I didn’t try…

Semi Skimmed Bantha Milk

With the modest success of a few of our supermarket subversions recently my brain seems to have jumped onto the whole fake ad/culture jamming bandwagon and now it seems I can’t go to the shop without coming up with some new form of contrived nonsense. And today’s offering is a pretty good case in point.

A long time ago in a galaxy far away I was strutting the aisles of my local supermarket trying to locate something they undoubtedly didn’t have when my eye chances upon the full fat milk with the blue lid. And that was all I needed to connect blue and milk and come up with the blue milk from Star Wars called bantha milk. We even see Luke Skywalker pour himself a glass in Star Wars whilst he’s living with his aunt and uncle at their moisture farm in Tatooine.

That was all I needed in the way of a plan so went home and set to work. A couple of parsecs later and I had my label good to go – complete with interview with their sand person dairy farmer on Tatooine. All that was then required was a bottle of milk, some blue food dye and a fake price label and I was good to go.

I can already see the print and TV advertising that would go alongside this new miracle food with a tag line along the lines of “With a few glasses of semi-skimmed bantha in you a day you’ll be strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark in no time.” In fact, that’s given me an idea…

How can i tell her?

Well, well, well, it’s clearly that time of year again. We originally did a wall sized version of this almost 5 years ago now for the Big Draw back in 2009 and since then occasionally get commissioned to do a small version for someone’s wall. I think my favourite aspect of this picture is his desperation at his inability to tell her that they aren’t really lovers and are, in fact, just stencils. Life can be tough, can’t it?
