The first casualty of graffiti is innocence (a.k.a. Cliff was visibly upset – the video)

We have already put the still photo of ‘Cliff was visibly upset…’ up but now, after a little tinkering with our Super 8 footage, we have the pleasure of bringing you the moving picture version. If you’re not satisfied – you can have your 1 minute 55 back!

If, like me, you can clearly remember the first time you watched Oliver Stone’s ‘Platoon‘ then the death of Sgt. Elias (Willem Dafoe) is a pretty emotional scene where Adagio for Strings is playing over footage of a wounded Sgt. Elias trying to escape from the Viet Cong but ultimately getting mowed down in a hail of gunfire. I felt my dramatic fall was entirely reminiscent of this epic scene so felt a small homage would be worthy for inclusion in our humble production.  For my fact of the day I’ve learned that the iconic image of Sgt Elias with his hands in the air is actually a recreation of a famous 1968 war photo by Art Greenspon (as depicted below – and if you can’t remember or haven’t watched the scene from Platoon i’ve included that too!):

I’ve put plenty of links in today but i’m not entirely sure how many of them will work as many US based websites are shutting down for the day to show solidarity to opposing some potentially far reaching copyright legislation that the US is considering that would make it illegal for any US site to link to any site that has any copyright infringing material. Now, whilst this doesn’t directly affect the UK at the moment you can be sure that we’ll be passing something similar if it gets through over there and, personally, I quite like the internet as it is…

Upfest @ Freeze 2011 video

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk0udsOFnTc]

Unfortunately we forgot to get out our video camera out at Freeze festival this year – but fear not as it has all been captured and edited much better than we would have done in the short video above. Our piece gets featured a little and you even get a quick shot of someone having a crafty puff on our extra large art fag. Good times all round…

I smoke art fags for breakfast

Like a bullet to the head…

Howstrake Camp. It looks an unlikely spot, but...

Image via Wikipedia

Okay, it’s Monday morning, it’s British summertime  and the sun is shining for once. What a nice change that makes. To further delight you we have a short video made at an abandoned location on the Isle of Man featuring some of our work and some work from the wonderful Stedhead. I think my favourite touch is the addition of a bullet hole in the head of a character we painted a while ago. I have also linked to the video of us painting the character in question which is the bottom video.

I grew up dreaming of snow!

Like some overblown Hollywood epic this newest video has been a long time in the making (well, we originally did the piece in November last year so it’s been a fair while).

We were asked to take part in creating some work for the Freeze festival which is held annually in the shadow of Battersea power station. As it was a snowboarding/skiing themed event we thought we’d come up with a little something keeping in line with the general snow theme. After a little deliberation we settled upon the face of the girl with the legend ‘I grew up dreaming of snow!’ and after cutting some big stencils we headed down to get to work. Thankfully on the day the weather stayed nice despite big rain clouds looming for a while in the afternoon.

A big shout out to our fellow artists who it is always a pleasure to work alongside – Ian Phenna, SPQR and Asone (whose work you see fleetingly when the camera pans around towards the end of video).

Exclusive video of alien abduction!

It has taken a little while and a lot of effort but we finally have exclusive video evidence of  an alien abduction!  This video was apparently shot in London late last year and whilst we still have the footage unfortunately the cow has never been seen again…

If you never hear from us again however you’ll know the men in black were sent after us but i’m not going to be frightened into non-disclosure about my UFO experience. The internet needs to know! Now whilst I’m not sure exactly what they use the cows for I can only hope they are spirited away to bovine nirvana or perhaps just get to drive round the universe gazing out the window and ruminating on the futility of existence. Only the cow knows for sure…

And the final shot of the cow just before she disappeared forever:

Big respect for my man DWTV for being brave enough for passing the footage on. Your sacrifice will always be remembered!

Jealousy – 5 months on…

Just thought we’d get our last couple of bits out so we could start afresh in 2011. We did ‘Jealousy‘ in late summer and revisited it at Christmas and i really liked the way it looks like it’s aging so thought we’d put up a graffiti archaeology shot. Hopefully it will be looking more decrepit next time we get to visit.

The Star Wars commission

Opening logo to the Star Wars films

Image via Wikipedia

We finally managed to get our Star Wars commission finished this week (see here and here for earlier blog entries). It was done as a commission on an 8ft x 5ft wall for a 6 year old Star Wars fan extraordinaire (yes, he even has the Star Wars bed sheets like i used to have). As he was more of a fan of the newer films I thought it best to stick to the new look clone trooper (originally designed by Genndy Tartakovsky for the animated/comic series) and throw in some design elements.

The clonetrooper on slate (see here) has also now been framed and is also hanging in pride of place on the other wall. The best part was obviously finding out how the recipient felt about his new mural. He was pretty excited and will apparently be the envy of all his friends!  All in all a most satisfying conclusion…

You can check a very, very short video (just 15 secs!) below. We couldn’t use our video camera as the room was too small and it could only focus on a small area of wall so we just put some still shots to a great little Star Wars soundtrack…

Fool come save me (video)

After much fiddling with the footage, soundtrack and editing software i finally have something to present… Ladies and gentlemen our newest video ‘Fool come save me’!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbGOdzKMuS4]

As the spot we were painting/filming wasn’t very well lit i have had to brighten the footage considerably which has led to a degradation of quality but i suppose that’s just one of the trade-off’s i’ve had to make with this little video. I’m particularly pleased with the soundtrack and how we’ve pretty much got it synced with the footage. It definitely looks better in person and if you are ever in Paignton you should head upstairs at the Lighthouse and check it out.

Fool come save me – Painting in Paignton

Panoramic photo of Paignton harbour in Devon.

Image via Wikipedia

We headed down to Paignton in Devon on the weekend to assist with the redecoration of a venue called the Lighthouse. After a busy day’s stencil cutting on Friday it was an early start (for a Saturday) and a 4 hour drive to the English Riviera. We arrived in Paignton at 12.30 to an overcast sky and a healthy seaside wind. Thankfully there was enough space to paint inside as i didn’t fancy our chances with a massive stencil and one of my arms in a cast with the wind driving off the sea.

We managed to get one large piece done called ‘Fool come save me’ (she measures about 6ft x 5ft) and numerous smaller bits done. It’s always good to catch up with various people and make some new friends – especially easy when you have disco bag on hand to help out with some tunes.

After getting our work finished we decided to get some fish and chips for dinner and then have a couple of drinks on Paignton seafront (yes, i did feel like i was 17 again) before too long we got moved on by the police (again feeling very much like i was seventeen again) and we then spent an hour or two drinking by the harbour, pictured above (as apparently this was allowed whereas drinking on the seafront wasn’t) before moving indoors at a local hostelry and then back to the Lighthouse for some after hours fun. All in all a great weekend away.

Hopefully a little video will be forthcoming once i manage to stick something together… Watch this space!

Cheers

Jealousy – graffiti by id-iom

I think i’m finally getting a bit of a better idea of how to work the video editing software which is definitely a good thing. We have already done a post on Jealousy (see here) but i have now managed to work the video into something watchable. Our green eyed monster was a quick hit (well – quick for us at about 45 minutes) on an abandoned wall. He’s about 8ft tall and definitely has something of a worrying look in his eyes…
