To drink from your lips…

To drink from your lips…

Now if there is one thing I love it’s a good bit of wombling. You know; making good use of the things that we find, things that the everyday folk leave behind. Anyway, there i was heading to the pub one evening when I chance upon this piece of wood. I’m still unsure of it’s previous purpose in life but it now has a higher calling. It sat in the hall of my house for about 3 months before inspiration struck and I had an actual plan for dealing with it. After walking past it everyday an idea had percolated into my head. I came up with the idea of a couple kissing, now I’m not entirely sure where the idea came from but that’s the muse for you.

So far so good. But then ‘Iceberg! Dead ahead!’ The trouble lay with the fact that the piece of wood was incredibly uneven and paint just didn’t look good on it so, for a short while, it was back to the drawing board until a solution jumped out at me. That solution came in the form of some polyfilla from the pound shop, which just seemed perfect for my plans.

After applying two tubs of the stuff and sanding it down it was ready for the final touches which consisted of a little painting here a touch up of polyfilla there and voilà. There still seemed to be something missing though, which I rectified with some words around the edge of the piece saying:

“Finally I will drink life from your lips
and wake up from this ever lasting sleep”

The only problem now is what to do with it as its now quite heavy and pretty fragile. Hmmmmm? Choices!!! It may well have to end up on the street if I can think of somewhere suitable unless someone wants to give it a better home somewhere…

One more drink…

We’ve done quite a range of work down at the Electric Social in Brixton over the past couple of years and with the folks behind it getting themselves a new venue in Southend they came back to us for some more id-iom brand contemporary interior decoration. The East Coast Social is to have a similar look and feel to the Electric Social. They wanted that to include some spray painted work on the interior and we were more than happy to oblige. So, with the first nice day of Spring in the air we packed up the id-iomobile and headed for the coast. Knowing it was to be something of a long day we started early so we’d make sure to be able to finish as their grand opening is this weekend…

With the somewhat discordant accompaniment of a sound engineer running their speakers through a sound test and some workman hammering away we set to work. The main issue was having to work around the light fitting that was already up on the wall but, thankfully, we’d already thought this through in the design stage and so started there with the dark bulb logo stencil and worked the rest of the background from there. A couple of applications of the main stencil and a bit of colouring in later and here you have it. The somewhat sobering thought of needing another drink to be able to deal with her new fella…

Man the f*ck up!

I’ve had a slightly enigmatic little project on the go for a little while now (as I’m really not sure what to do with it) and needed some fake advertising for the reverse side. Hmmm… What to do, what to do? Then in a  small flash of inspiration it came to me. I would create a drink advertisement for a nice frosty can of ‘Man the fuck up!’ Once I had that much locked in the rest of the design pretty much took care of itself.

I would imagine the drink to be something along the lines of an alcoholic power drink (do they even exist?) to be consumed when life conspires against you. A little something that would definitely separate the men from the boys. The online and TV advertising would feature an accompanying soundtrack of a dubstep version of Billy Ocean’s 1985 hit ‘When the going gets tough’ followed by the tagline of ‘Feeling tired and emotional? Try a can of Man the fuck up!’ read by James Earl Jones. And that would be that.  I just wonder what a can of Man Up would  actually tastes like…

Let it drip from my soul

let it drip from my soul flickr

Some people say soul music drips with emotion but with this lady it is in fact her actual soul that’s slowly dripping away. She’s currently happy with that as well for she doesn’t really seem to care about normal life much any more, if at all. All that interests her now are things like dubious liaisons with pretty men, driving fast cars at breakneck speeds, getting her daily recommended intake of water through vodka and taking enough drugs to take down a fully grown elephant and its calf. And somehow she does all this with a wink and a smile.

To some she’s killing herself and to others she’s living her life to the full. Either way I hope she’ll grow out of it soon because i’m pretty sure it doesn’t have a happy ending…

Hand in Hand

Hand in Hand flyer front

Hand in Hand flyer back

As long time patrons of our local pub we were more than happy to assist when they asked us to design a flyer for a spot of local promotion. After some initial inspiration all that was needed was a little tinkering on the computer and we had a nice little image worked up.

Like the flyer says ‘Music, sports, pool table, chat and good times’ – although not necessarily in that order. At least I know where I’ll be going for a few jars tonight…

F**ked Up And Flawed

F**ked Up And Flawed

F**ked Up And Flawed

Nobody’s perfect are they? We all have our weaknesses and are slightly defective in one way or other. Some more than others but that’s just the way of the world. Surely the discrepancies and inconsistencies are a large part of what makes us what we are? Are they not something to be celebrated and explored? Other than being male I can entirely put myself in the position of this young lady who appears to have had one too many but at least still seems to be enjoying herself somewhat. Make of it what you will…

Here is the ebay link

She’s a generous A2 in size and is made using the magic of spray paint, stencils, acrylic paint and screen printing. Signed on reverse.

The Old Jamm Inn

The Old Jamm Inn

Some people seem to have all the luck don’t they? There we were hard at ‘work’ (a euphemism for sitting at home trying not to distract each other from the tricky task of watching ‘Homes under the Hammer‘ whilst simultaneously ignoring both work deadlines and frigid draughts that seem to beset us from all sides) when my phone chirps to let me know it has received a text. After warming my fingers for a few seconds under a lighter i’m able to move my fingers enough to operate the phone. I somehow manage to press the necessary buttons and wipe the frost from the screen. My phone then reveals that we’ve been commissioned to design a logo for a new bar opening in sunny Barbados. How very fortunate – for the person moving out there and setting up shop that is!

Being the happy little worker bees that we are we then get as much information as we can pertaining to this forthcoming venture and set to work – properly this time but only after Homes under the Hammer has finished, naturally, and after setting a small fire under the computer to get her warmed up. I just know he’s not going to be having the same problems in the ‘Old Jamm Inn‘ when it finally opens in Spring 2013. I think their tagline is ‘Booze, beats and burgers’. Sounds ideal really.

If you’re in the neighbourhood next year I’d suggest you drop by for a warm welcome and a cold drink. Jamie, if you’re reading this and you need the interior painted up just let us know – we’ll happily take a busman’s holiday for flights and board!

Odds and sods

You’ve seen pretty much all we have to offer at the House of Pain(t) – but not quite everything. Today we have a round up of all the stuff that hasn’t fitted in elsewhere. We’ve got some wheatpastes, stencils, bits of cardboard and a bit of wall…

Bobblehead

My least favourite bobbleheaded creature has to that stupid dog from the Churchill adverts. If i’m honest I’ve got little in the way of explanation for this piece or why he has what appears to be a bobblehead other than the wall was there and needed painting on. Not everything in this world can have a purpose…

Mupan flexing his muscles. Just a little.

Mupan has bigger muscles than you without even flexing. You know it and he knows it. Now on your way…

One too many

We all know the feeling (well, Team id-iom certainly does) of having just one drink too many in pursuit of a good time. The main problem is the more you drink the less self control you have – just when you need it most. Ah well, at least it’s the wekeend soon enough.

Tigers Only

Strange Facts #11 Siegfried and Roy once stayed in the House of Pain(t) (back when it was a normal house) and their tigers stayed with them in the basement. This was a warning sign above the door. And the male tiger always wore a hat. And that’s a fact. Or at least that’s what i was told…

Moustachio

We’re a little late for Movember but this gentleman is not the kind of man who only has a moustache for a month. No, siree. His is a permanent fixture and he’s proud of it.

I never really read superhero stuff as a kid

The funny thing about this piece is that i did read superhero stuff as a kid. Ha! Hey, irony, try that one on for size! I have a huge treasure trove of comics stashed away at home, an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of comic trivia and have even worked at a comics publisher. So there. Anyway, i digress.

I’m not sure if you will have seen a film called Super (which i quite enjoyed – maybe i should start doing film reviews too?) but the girl in this picture reminds me of his female sidekick Boltie (played by Ellen Page).

I’m a mole and I live in a hole

How on earth this mole seems to be climbing out of a pot that wouldn’t even fit him in I have no clue. Suffice it to say the mole was sat in the basement and needed a new home before we moved out.

We’ve got one final wall to show in the next day or two then we’ll hopefully have some demolition porn and then the House of Pain(t) will be no more. We will also have the video that the guys from Spraying Bricks shot that should be out before Xmas and also a little video for posterity that we shot ourselves (when it’s finally all edited together). Bring on the next condemned building…

Cloud room panorama

Cloud room panorama

After uncovering the sordid affair that has been happening in the cloud room I thought it best to reveal all in one big panorama. You’ll just to trust me that it looks better in person considering that the demolition team are now going to be the only people to actually see it in situ.

I wonder if we’ll be able to get a few bricks with painting on as mementos once the old girl has been brought crashing down…
