King of the Swingers

So this is the second piece we did for a friend’s child and with this one we thought we’d go for something he may hopefully appreciate when he gets a little older as he’s currently under 1 and it’s difficult to know exactly what people that small really like when it comes to art appreciation. We were told he likes monkeys (who doesn’t?) and as soon as I was told that the lyrics from the Jungle Book’s ‘I wanna be like you’ popped in to my head and that was enough for me. As the other half of id-iom had gone for the light, colourful and fluffy side of the coin, i decided to take it the other way and make it a little dark and menacing just for good measure.

When i started the picture of the monkey it seemed a little flat and lifeless so i decided to cut out the swinging monkey and apply some cardboard to the back of it so that it gave a little shadow. After this all that there was left to do was try and frame it so it looked a little more gift-like (all framers out there no need to worry your jobs are safe).

King of the Corvidae

“It was not a job he wanted but, somehow, it was a job he’d got. He was standing on a small pile of rocks with a light morning breeze ruffling his feathers and gazing out over the sea of carnage in front of him. A magpie standing nearby was nervously recounting the events of the previous evening. His words came in staccato gasps ‘The seagulls came in the dead of night and attacked en masse. Everyone was exhausted from the feast of McDonalds. A couple of rooks managed to raise the alarm but it was already too late…’. The words washed over him while he slowly came to the realisation that he was now in charge. Tears could wait. It was time to show these gulls who ruled the airspace around here once and for all.”

If I had to write a story based on this picture I’m pretty sure that’s how it would start. An epic tale of urban avian skullduggery with more aerial combat, vicious peckings and egg smashings than any story has a right to contain. All conducted right above our heads on the busy London streets. I think maybe I just got up too early this morning…

The Christmas Skull

The Christmas Skull

The Christmas Skull

I think there should be a jolly festive song called ‘The Christmas skull’. I have done a cursory bit of internet research and it would appear that no errant songsmith has managed to come to my aid as of yet. We live in hope. This piece was actually drawn on Christmas morning last year whilst recovering from the shenanigans of the previous evening (which included losing a dog that wasn’t ours) and waiting for a lift up to my auntie’s for Christmas Day. The picture isn’t very pretty but then again neither was I at the time. I felt defeated but still in charge. Like a king whose lost a battle but is still around to try and make amends. I think a combination of hangover and sleep deprivation was probably just kicking in at that point though…

I am indeed a king

I am Indeed a King

I am Indeed a King

Now it may not look like it but this little guy knows a thing or two. He has been treading the path to self enlightenment and has finally found the key. Despite that he looks somewhat deranged and is reminiscent of Keith Evil ‘King of the Crazy Talk’ he is, in fact, closer to nirvana than you’re ever likely to get. Having said that however he’s lost a few marbles in the process so it’s difficult to know what’ll come of him. Or how long he’ll be king of his own destiny…

King Dog and the Angels

King Dog and the Angels

King Dog and the Angels

When we started working upstairs at the House of Pain(t) we invited a couple of friends along to help out. In one of the upstairs rooms Perspicere went to work doing a thread piece that my poor photography skills just don’t do justice to as it’s pretty elaborate and nebulous (it’s the thinner dark thread you can just about make out in the background). He even came back the next week to try and get it completed but then had to leave early due to a small domestic emergency. After doing pretty much all the rest of the house we had his not-quite-completed room to contend with. As there were so many nails in the walls and thread all over the place the only thing we could really do was continue his work to some degree.

So we decided to make it some kind of  angel and ‘laser’ protected shrine to a strange canine king that is looking benignly down on a pair of kissing angels. It sounds odd now I’ve written it down but it seemed the only course of action we could reasonably take at that time.  You have to use your imagination a little to pretend the red threads are laser beams protecting the shrine but i must stress that the effect is really much better if you see it in person (which you can’t). The angels had been lurking in the basement for some project that never came to pass and they just took up too much space to be transported onwards with us. I hope they’re happy.

A crown fit for a king

A crown fit for a king

Since we did the Paperwallet screen-print design a little while ago I’ve been slightly obsessed with the screen-print equipment and coming up with a good one screen design that would work well at any size (well, two screens if you count the ‘id-iom certified’ stamp). For ‘A crown fit for a king’ I came across the notion that in heraldry a crown would be set upon a crest to signify the status of it’s owner and thought i could run with that as the basis for the design. What’s the significance of the ‘125’ i hear you cry. Well, all i can say is that it is something that should hopefully make sense to the recipient. And we’ll have to leave it at that for now…

Cash is King

For this little piece i came up with the title first and it was all just plain sailing from there on in. I think it may have been after i was listening to ‘Suspicious minds’ that this one came to mind – although it’s always tricky to be sure. The stencil is quite small  and i’m reasonably happy with the result. I think next time i should probably try and get a crisp note for such purposes.

As somebody commented on flickr apparently it is illegal to deface dollar bills so i’m just glad i don’t live in the U.S. as i would hate to have a knock at the door for doing this…
