Soylent Green – in store now!

Soylent Green – in store now!

Soylent Green – available now!

After being dispatched to our local corner shop to procure some Le Puy lentils for that evening’s curry I had reason to examine the dizzying array of canned food on offer in our local corner shop. Along with all the usual products they also have some particular goods that cater to the local Caribbean, Polish and Portuguese communities. It’s sometimes tricky to tell what some of the more exotic looking cans even contain. And that gave me an idea.

The 1973 film ‘Soylent Green’ starring Charlton Heston is set in a dystopian future where the earth is hugely overpopulated and there just isn’t enough food to go round. To try and solve this problem the Soylent corporation comes up with a new foodstuff called ‘Soylent Green’ which is ostensibly made from high energy plankton harvested from the world’s oceans. But that is not so, as we discover through Heston’s diligent detective work following a murder. He stumbles upon a bizarre state secret – that Soylent Green is made of people!

So, to celebrate both the incomprehensible range of cans on offer in our local shop and the 1973 film I came up with some Soylent Green cans for our local shop – complete with ingredients, nutrition information and cooking instructions. An internet search revealed that Polynesian cannibals used to call human flesh ‘longpig’ so I definitely had to include that (23% of the contents don’t you know!)

People I Like (pink/grey)

People I Like (pink/grey)

People I Like (pink/grey)

I don’t think the motivation behind this piece is entirely difficult to imagine. If you haven’t worked in an office then you can’t imagine how lucky you are. If, however, you have worked in an office then I’m sure you can appreciate the sentiment behind this piece. You only really have to spend a day in just about any office to know what I’m on about. In fact, that feeling is probably one of the reasons I love doing art so much. No one (well almost no-one) to answer to or to tell you what to do. And any credit (or otherwise) goes directly to you. No evil boss trying to take the credit (or pass the blame). Ah, the life of an artist…

This is a professionally printed 4 colour screen print (including a varnish layer) on high quality A2 paper. Signed and numbered. Only £50 (including P&P) to anywhere in the world. There are 14 left of this grey/pink colourway.

For detail of the varnish layer see here – www.flickr.com/photos/id-iom/4462404050/

I’ve got a dirty mind

I've got a dirty mind

I’ve got a dirty mind

There’s something that has been becoming ever more clear in my mind the older I get and that is that nearly all women are truly depraved. On the surface they may seem composed and serene but in reality they can match any man when it comes to filthy and impure thoughts. When women are in groups the kind of things they talk about aren’t shopping or any new beauty regimes, what is actually talked about is just down right dirty and I don’t mean anything so crass as ‘lady troubles’.

These women talk about anything any group of men will talk about but its nearly always about 10 times worse with incredible bouts of vulgarity. The only reason i know this is a technique i’ve learnt called ‘keeping mum and getting drunk’ which, if you’re good at, will eventually lead to them chattering away and forgetting that you are even there. It is at this point that the magic really starts. Next time I’m in half a mind to try and record it – although i’d probably have to fear for my safety for a long time afterwards…

A Face for Radio

A Face for radio

A Face for radio

This girl is undoubtedly beautiful on the inside but in this day and age I would imagine she would be considered to have a good face for radio. I think it’s the pouty bottom lip and the mismatched eyes. Although there is nothing wrong with that as I have mismatched eyes and a somewhat pouty bottom lip (especially when sulking) although I, of course, am stunningly good looking and my asymmetry is part of my charm…

More and more these days though, the less fortunate (i.e less photogenic) men and women of the world (‘interesting looking’ as my mum would say) are being moved aside and being replaced by identikit facsimiles of some supposed beauty. Just take a look at FHM’s hot 1oo sexiest women. Now I haven’t read FHM since I was about 14 but its pretty difficult to miss their 100 sexiest list as it has been over numerous websites – including the ever respectable BBC. If you take a look at the list though can you really say all the women on there are the sexiest on the planet? Sexy must definitely mean something different from when i was a lad. It now seems to mean that all you have to do is be seen on some fluffy reality TV and that’s it job done.

I should probably stop now, turn on the radio and get back to painting as there is a possibility I could be ranting all day…

The Office…

People i like... (pink/grey version)

People i like... (blue/red version)

People i like... (varnish detail)

I love our studio… Just yesterday for example I was tidying up our ‘paper storage’ area and came across a small selection of the one and only proper print we’ve ever put out. It’s a four colour print on top quality A2 paper (well, strictly 3 colour and one varnish layer) and was created by a real professional (it’s just too frustrating to try doing multiples with our current set up!)

Anyway, as Christmas is on the way we are offering these little beauties for just £50 (including postage to anywhere in the world!) so buy now – before they are all gone!

If, however, you have worked in an office then I’m sure you can appreciate the sentiment behind this piece.  You only really have to spend a day in just about any office to know what i’m on about. Office politics, bickering, backstabbing, blame. You name it. In fact, that feeling is probably one of the reasons I love doing art so much. No one (well almost no-one) to answer to or to tell you what to do. And any credit (or otherwise) goes directly to you. No boss trying to take the credit (or pass the blame). My Favourite Celebrity Quotes… Part 2

As promised in an earlier post i’m showing some more of the Celebrity Quote pieces we produced last year. As a whole host of celebrities are seemingly paid huge amounts to come up with vapid and narcissistic comments I thought it only fair to hold a mirror up to their vanity and show what pampered children they tend to be. Saying that some of them make me laugh and that’s apparently the best medicine – so maybe they should be prescribed on the NHS. I’m not doctor so don’t quote me on that though…

I don’t really think they need much introduction but in case you’ve forgotten what Hugh Grant‘s is about check here. These were so much fun I’m surprised I haven’t done more…

Swapsies!

We have recently completed a swap deal with the lovely and very talented Mimilove. If you haven’t checked her stuff out before check her flickr here and her most amusing blog here. We didn’t give her much to go on for hers but she did her research and came up with this lovely piece which references a few of our favourite things, namely graffiti, the Isle of Man (where we are from) and Manx cats:

Keeping a general cat theme to the whole thing we then managed to come up with this by way of response. Apparently ‘An Army of Mimi’ has been well received so i’m calling that a good swap – everybody’s happy! The picture doesn’t really do justice to the glitter we put on the heart though:
