A portrait of the artist as a young man

Well our time in the House of Pain(t) has finally drawn to a close and the demolition crew have already moved in. Apparently they’ve done whatever internal work they needed to do and the place will start tumbling to the ground later today. We should hopefully have some pics we can show before too long too and I wouldn’t mind collecting a memento or two if we can while we are at it…

Anyway, onto today’s piece ‘A portrait of the artist as a young man’. I have clearly stolen the title from the James Joyce novel of the same name. That’s probably where the similarities begin and end. It’s based on a photograph of me taken a couple of years ago and features me giving a big thumbs up whilst wearing my best winning smile. I think the fact that my smile is obscured behind the respirator I’m wearing just goes to make me look that bit more enigmatic. Either that or vacant. I’m not really sure which.

I think after today there’s only the panorama to reveal from this room then a couple more bits and we’re all done. Oh well, onwards and upwards…

Rasclaat!

So there i was trying to work out what to paint on the wall when the idea of doing a self portrait suddenly occured to me. I’m not entirely why I decided to do it as i reckon it’s fairly dangerous ground to cover. It seems a little self obsessed and surely everyone is their own worst critic – especially when the subject is themselves. Nonetheless i decided to carry on regardless and see what would come.

Now I probably wouldn’t be making this post if I was entirely dismayed at my attempts to capture myself and would probably have just painted straight over it in a pique of embarrassment, so,  i suppose by virtue of the fact that you can see my attempt means that i’m somewhat pleased with the end result. Although anyone who knows me (and is therefore in a position to comment) will surely be able to make up their own mind as to the success of my venture. So i’ll just leave it at that for now…

The many faces of lunacy

The muse had departed and inspiration was hard to come by…

The say the devil makes work for idle hands so i decided to keep busy composing a few self portraits to see me through the long winter nights

Also, you don’t have to tell me what a stunner i am as i already know!

Wrong picture again!

About a year ago we were rooting around in a charity shop as we are wont to do sometimes and came across the picture we have used as the background below. It only cost a few quid and i just knew that we’d come up with a good use for it… Along came the day when i’d cut my parachutist stencil when it all just seemed to fit so i digged the picture out and hey presto – new art!

Once i’d done one i couldn’t resist putting it on another:
