Blown away

Hmmmm…. This chap looks uncannily like one half of id-iom. And it would appear he’s just been shot in the chest whilst walking down the street drinking some beer. Like, OMG dude! But don’t worry. He’s an actor. Nobody was injured in the making of this piece. It’s all done with explosive squibs and fake blood. It just looks eerily convincing.

This is, in fact, just an artists’ impression of a scene from the upcoming biopic ‘When we ruled the world’ about the tumultuous and sometimes fiery relationship between the two members of id-iom which is slated for international release in 2015.

Dead bad shot

Dead bad shot

Dead bad shot

This picture was painted on the run up to Christmas where we are inundated with strange & nonsensical perfume and supermarket ad’s, there’s Christmas songs playing non-stop and I also heard some carol singers (I actually quite like carol singers and they are one of the things i enjoy about Christmas). It’s meant to be Spring time now and this post is still accompanied by freezing conditions and high winds. What other time of year could it possibly be? To throw our Springtime hat into the ring we bring you ‘Dead Bad Shot’. It features a lot of red. Like roses. And blood.

This one is definitely from left field and is probably some kind of portal into my tar black soul. I’m probably baring my innermost fears and don’t even know about it. I’m sure a psychiatrist could probably have more fun with this than the old Rorschach test. Anyway I have to go as there are other dark and creepy thoughts just begging to be let out of my head and set down on paper. Toodle pip for now!

It is A2 in size and is made using the magic of acrylic paint and ink. Signed on reverse.

You give love a bad name

You give love a bad name (featuring a very angry robin!)

So it’s Valentine’s Day again and we’ve been busy. This shot has really got it all – something Valentine related, an earworm and even a bit of wildlife. A winning shot if ever I’ve managed to take one. Despite the fact that the robin looks cute he was, in fact, very angry. He didn’t seem to appreciate our work. Everyone’s a critic…

We’ve previously done an earworm and I thought it was about time to give it another go. The success or otherwise of this piece hinges on the fact that just about everyone is familiar with Bon Jovi’s ‘You give love a bad name‘ and so I’ve done my best to try and get it playing unheeded in your brain. For no reason other than I can. It’s difficult to know how successful I’ll be but them’s the breaks.

BANG BANG! I shot you down!

BANG BANG!! I shot you down from across the room

BANG BANG!! I shot you down the stairs

I shot you down in progress

I shot you down in progress

I shot you down in progress

There’s nothing like applying paint directly to a wall in someone’s house to cheer you up. Heating, access to drinks and the toilet, no wind to contend with and access to Modern Warfare 3 on the Xbox whilst waiting for emulsion to dry. What more could a humble artist want?

As this was being going directly on the wall in his house we had been through a few iterations of various designs with the client until we finally managed to tweak it till we had something he was happy with. He wanted something impactful as you come into his house and one of the many reference ideas he had given us was the JR piece which had been on the Tate which depicts a man with a camera (although I think it looks like a gun on first glance) so we had gone down that route. As for the text I think I may have, at some point during the design process, been listening to ‘I shot you down’ by the Audio Bullys (below) which features extensive vocal samples from Nancy Sinatra‘s 1966 song ‘Bang Bang’ (although the song was originally written for Cher by Sonny Bono!) I particularly like the way in which the target character always seems to be aiming directly at you (which was obviously intentional…)

Blown away

I don’t think this chap looks all that upset seeing as he’s just been shot in the chest. But don’t worry. He’s an actor. Nobody was injured in the making of this piece. It’s all done with explosive squibs and fake blood. It just looks eerily convincing. What seems to be going through his mind, once again, is kittens, guns and bombs…
