Boards, glorious boards (part 6)

Lips so nice we did ’em twice

Soooooo, it’s Friday and we’re off to the Isle of Wight festival to do a bit of djing. What a lovely day for it. Anyway, i digress. If you haven’t been paying attention then a brief recap is probably in order. Here it goes –  we went down to Somerset to paint some boards for Pootopia who provide toilets at festivals.  They have hundreds of compostable toilets and are beautifying them with some artwork on boards which fit into the toilet doors. Which is where we came in. We set ourselves a somewhat ambitious target of completing 40 boards over the weekend. Despite working just about as hard as we could we only managed a final tally of 32 completed boards (with 7 left just as backgrounds and one MIA). Not too shabby if i say so myself. The hard part was trying to make it so they didn’t all look too similar.

Today I present to you our sixth set of boards and I can see the finish line from here. Right, cats to herd and curtains to iron. Toodle pip for now…

Cheers

The terror

So this is our third set of boards and we aren’t even half way through them yet! As previously mentioned we headed to Somerset to paint as many boards as we could handle in a weekend for the nice folks at Pootopia.

It was pretty busy weekend and we didn’t finish till 9pm on Sunday but less about my troubles here’s the third load of finished boards…

Meanwhile in Brixton…

A bird in the hand

Dead good dibo

Pink buccaneer wallpaper

With festival season almost upon us we were invited down to Somerset to paint as many boards as we could handle in a weekend for the nice folks at Pootopia. They have hundreds of compostable toilets and are beautifying them with some artwork on boards which fit into the toilet doors. Which is where we come in. After jumping in the id-iomobile and heading West into the setting sun we arrived late so got to work early Saturday morning and set ourselves a somewhat ambitious target of completing 40 boards over the weekend. Despite working just about as hard as we could we only managed a final tally of 32 completed boards (with 7 left just as backgrounds and one MIA). Not too shabby if i say so myself. The hard part was trying to make it so they didn’t all look too similar.

It was somewhat manic and we didn’t finish till 9pm on Sunday but here’s the second load of finished boards…

Skele-tone

Skele-Tone

Skele-Tone

I understand that skulls and skeletons are a little passé but there is something really rather enjoyable about painting them. Its probably to do with the fact that they are so easily recognisable yet still rather alien to us at the same time. As you can tell by the pose of this skeleton he was in life a bit of a dick always thinking he’s better than everyone else. Just look how even now he stares off into the middle distance like he’s pondering something incredibly important – which he isn’t. What a self important fool…

That said, this particular skull has been imbued with special powers . And I don’t mean anything like the crystal skulls in the latest Indians Jones movie either. This bugger’s special ability is to change the colour tone of his skull whilst your painting him. Which can be quite annoying let me tell you. One minute your using azure blue the next process red, what a shit indeed. Anyway i solved the problem surrounding him – you just make the colours up as you go along. Job done.

We come in peace…

‘We come in peace, shoot to kill!’. Lines immortalised by ‘Captain Kirk’ in the Firm’s 1987 hit ‘Startrekkin’. Now, whilst that song has thankfully been swallowed by the sands of time the sentiment expressed in those lines is still very much alive and well. It’s cats. They think like that.

Cats are inscrutable little suckers. Even at the best of times there’s just no telling what they’re thinking. When you think they’re being friendly they’re probably just demanding food or threatening to kill you. And if ever they do get opposable thumbs then we’re probably in for some serious trouble. I, for one, welcome our new cat overlords…

The Kiss of Death

The ‘kiss of death’ is generally considered to be an action or event that may appear innocuous but that actually brings about ruin and failure. It was also the name of a single shot gun concealed in a lipstick which was designed (and assumably used) by the KGB during the Cold War years.

With that in mind I can’t look at this picture and think of the title ‘Kiss of Death’ without imagining it as the opening of a James Bond film complete with saucy title sequence and musical accompaniment. I’ve even got the first scene worked out. Cut to a high ranking British diplomat having dinner with some foxy young lady. They then go back to a hotel room and she pulls her lipstick and shoots him in the liver with it and smiles a predatory smile. Cut to title sequence with Shirley Bassey belting out ‘Kiss of Death’ and you’re off.

The Power of Voodoo

I was reading the other day of something called the Mpemba effect which roughly states that under certain conditions hot water will freeze quicker than cold water. After thinking about it for a while and then reading a little more on the subject I have come to the conclusion that this simple fact has blown my tiny mind. Surely that is the most counter-intuitive thing you’ll hear all day? How does that make any sense at all? Is it magic?

Now, what does this have to do with today’s post I can hear our legions of readers crying? Well, frankly, it’s something of a tenuous link to today’s piece which is called ‘The Power of Voodoo’. She’s something of an abstract combination of spray paint, stencils and screen printing on a lovely old piece of slate which we saved from certain death. Hence our title for this little beauty as she has been resurrected and will now hopefully have a full and happy second life as a piece of art.

Cheers
